What can we do 2yr old 3lb. blue long hair chihuahua w/ no hair?

We tease and say she is a chinese crested but honestly chinese cresteds have more hair than she does! We don't realyy know if there is anything that can be done. I know she is healthy but small!

My Fiance and I have a 1 1/2 year old blue Chihuahua that is bald as well. I Personally wouldn't wast your time going to the vet about it. we have spent almost $1000.00 trying to figure out what it could be. first the vet tells us its skin mites so we gave him ivermectin for almost 2 months and nothing happined. After that we took him to 4 other vets in the area, everyone seemed to have a different answer and a different cream or spray for us to try every time we got done. Nothing has helped. So i started looking it up on the internet and found that Blue dogs (Not just Chihuahuas) seem to have the same problem. It's nothing that can hurt them it just seems to happen! Hope this helps!!

Has she always lacked hair, or has onset only occured recently? If she was a hairless puppy, what did the breeder tell you about her and her bloodlines, and what did her own vet say when she had her initial check-up? Does she have mange or a skin condition, is she malnourished or does she suffer glandular abnormalities? Have you taken her to the vet recently to make sure she doesn't have any of the above and to obtain advice or information about her lack of hair?

If not, how about making an appointment to do so tomorrow. At the very least I imagine she'll have problems with skin protection in even mild sunlight, and the vet may advise you use some form of sun protection for her if she is indeed as hairless as you portray her.

Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do for her. I have a 8 yr old Blue long-haired dachshund and when I first got her, she was already smooth on her back. She is now smooth on her back, head, ears and tail. I did take her to 2 different vets and they both said the same thing...the blue coats have skin issues that cause them to lose their hair. People will try to tell you about creams, sprays, etc..but in reality, you will just be wasting your money. I would say I have wasted at least $300 on treatments over the years and nothing has helped. Just love her for the way she is...A lot of people think that they have lost their hair due to age, so it really isn't a big deal. I think it makes them unique..lol..

It could be genetic - blue Doberman Pinschers tend to go bald around 2 years of age. I would go to www.akc.org %26amp; contact someone in the Chihuahua club to see if this is the case.

It could be several other things, like Cushings Disease, thyroid problems, to mites, too.

As long as she is otherwise healthy, just ask her vet about it on her next visit. Be sure to keep her warm with sweaters, especially if it is cold outside where you live now.

I'm sorry, but this is why Chihuahuas aren't supposed to come in blue.

Unfortunately, Ista is correct. Blue is not a recognised color with the AKC in many breeds, including the Chihuahua, the Doberman and the Miniature Pinscher, because of the genetic skin conditions this color causes. It is never a good idea to breed this color because of this issue, and only a really bad breeder would do so. You may never see any improvement in your dogs hair growth, and in fact, may see the opposite.

I would suggest a complete health check as well, just to make sure nothing else is going on.

Edit: off the AKC website-

Disqualification - In Long Coats, too thin coat that resembles bareness.

Blue IS a recognized color for chihuahuas in the AKC anyone who tells you differently doesnt know what there talking about. MERLE is the very highly questionaed color but currently ALL colors are acceptable on chihuahuas, heck they could be purple and still be accepted AKC at this point.

that being said.

unfortunatly alopecia (balding) is very common in solid blues that come from blue lines...a good breeder will never mate a blue to a blue or blue fawn because of the risks of alopecia.

make sure to have her skin checked by a vet for mange and other parisites...

If the scraping comes up clear have a blood test done for underlying thyroid issues...

if everything comes up clear its allopecia and shell always be nekkid...

what can you do to help her? keep her skin moist by using MILD shampoos, yogurt baths and organic NATURAL chemical free moisturizers, use a 55spf baby safe sunscreen and t-shirts in the sunny weather, and sweaters in the winter.

as long as he skin isnt bothering her shes in no pain, alopecia jsut causes hairloss.

good luck with her.

look up chinese crested skin care for tips on keeping her skin soft and safe :)
